New Book Store

Grandma’s Garden Book Store.

I’m really excited – I’m opening an on-line Book Store!

Wait, What?

I know, it sounds insane but I’m loving every minute of it.

I have several gardening type books and have been thinking of reviewing some of them for the blog but then I found out about Bookshop.org.

“Bookshop.org is an online bookshop with a mission to financially support local, independent bookshops.” – their words not mine but an apt description.

On March 1st 2021 they announced that more than 200,000 UK customers have used it since its November launch, generating sales of more than £5m and profit of £1m for the 410 independent bookshops signed up to it.  Not bad going in 4 months of UK trading!

How & Why?

They offer a large selection of books. You make your selections and then, using their map, you can find a specific local bookstore you want to support. Your order is then delivered straight to your door, alright it might take a day or two more than Amazon but hey-ho!

For books ordered directly from these online stores, booksellers receive 30% of the cover price from each sale without having to handle customer service or shipping. When a sale is made and not attributed to a specific bookseller, 10% of the cover price goes into a pot that is split between all of the shops.

Don’t get me wrong, I love Amazon for the choice and the next day delivery etc. And at a time when we are increasingly buying online, Bookshop.org has come up with a way of ensuring that indie bookshops continue to exist and thrive when they would other wise had to have closed their doors!

Brilliant concept – I love it! PLUS not only is it available in the UK but also in the USA.

So quite simply, if you like the book I’ve reviewed and you fancy buying it for yourself head over to the Book Store and treat yourself AND help your local indie bookstore at the same time.
